I caught a sneak preview of Slavko Martinov's Pecking Order, and it has everything you want in a movie: intrigue, conspiracy, subterfuge, heroes and villains. Oh, and chickens. Lots and lots of chickens. This doco - its creators jokingly call it a "flockumentary"- is going to make members of the Christchurch Poultry, Bantam and Pigeon Club world famous. Watch out for Doug, he's a gem. It opens nationwide on May 18, and I guess you could call it the ultimate chick flick (badoom tish).

I'm blitzing through The Stranger in the Woods by Michael Finkel. It covers the fascinating life story of Christopher Knight, who went into the woods aged 20 and didn't come out for 27 years. Even then, he only came out because he was caught during a burglary. Knight had survived in the woods by breaking into holiday homes for food, and had only spoken one word to another human the entire time. He didn't say goodbye to anyone and his parents never reported him missing. It's a bizarre story - and it's all true.
