Mel Gibson debuts new love on red carpet (+video)

Barely two weeks after his wife filed for divorce,

Mel Gibson

and his new girlfriend,

Oksana Grigorieva

, have made their first public appearance at a

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

screening in Los Angeles.

Gibson, 53, and Grigorieva, 38, were snapped holding hands as they strolled down the red carpet outside Grauman's Chinese Theatre in L.A.

News of Gibson's divorce rocked the showbiz community earlier this month, after his wife

Robyn

declared she wanted an end to their marriage of 28 years - citing irreconcilable differences.

The rumour mills went into overdrive following the announcement and speculated that the reason for his wife's divorce petition was down to Gibson's alleged extracurricular activities. Step forward the mystery Russian...

of the actor supposedly parading with a 'mystery Russian brunette' on a beach in Costa Rica were quickly splashed across the gossip columns, leaving us to ponder whether Gibson had found another love.

But putting a face to Gibson's new lady wasn't a cut and dry affair. Sure, the

snaps of our Mel frolicking

in the surf with a mystery woman signalled he'd possibly moved on after separating from wife Robyn, but who was she?

After a fun game of guess the (alleged) mistress, and

eliminating two Russian dolls

who were incorrectly reported as romancing the star, we finally meet his new significant other, Oksana Grigorieva.

They seem very much the couple.

Grigorieva, who is signed to Gibson's record label, and has a 11-year-old son with her former partner, James Bond actor

Timothy Dalton

, is obviously smitten with Mel and isn't put off by her man's impending divorce - which looks set to be the costliest ever.

His estranged wife Robyn could be entitled to half of his estimated $900 million fortune. It's been widely reported that the pair have not signed a prenuptial agreement.

The couple separated in 2006 and have seven children together.

Although Gibson and Grigorieva have reportedly been dating for three years, this is the first public display of affection

that's been showcased for our benefit.

Speaking of the loved-up couple's outing, his rep said: "Mel has been single for almost three years and it's nice to see him getting out and enjoying himself."

"They came in quietly and as under-the-radar as they could and they were pretty low-key," says a snitch. "Mel seemed very comfortable."

Low- key? If you're aiming to keep things on the down-low, parading down a red carpet with your new squeeze is probably not the best way of deflecting attention. We see all.

But was the red carpet stroll a definant declaration of "We're here, we're dear, get used to it!" or are we being strung along? Maybe they're just tactile and affectionate mates who like to hold hands...
