A reporter named April (played by Fox) is taken hostage by masked men, who carry high-tech futuristic weapons.
But next shot sees the turtles grab their weapons inside their lair after hearing news reports of the hostage situation.
They are next seen leaping into action, careening and flipping around the underground subway station, declaring "this is our city" as they defeat the criminals.
April watches in astonishment and confusion as they enact superhuman feats.
After succeeding they celebrate, "Like shadows in the night, completely unseen," one of the turtles declares after escaping the news cameras.
Following the ninjas as they congratulate each other on a rooftop, April takes a snap with her phone, accidentally exposing herself as she spies on them.
The turtles confront her, with Raphael demanding "give me the camera" in a gravelly voice as his brothers tease him saying, "look he's doing his Batman voice".
The four mutants then threaten her that if she talks about them "they will find her". Upon hearing the news April promptly faints.
The rest of the trailer quickly sees the villain, Shredder, introduced with new robotic samurai armour that makes him a formidable opponent.
Two of the turtles are captured, forcing the remaining mutants to rescue them and beat the robot samurai.
The final moments of the teaser sees Will Arnet, who appears to play April's news editor, ask about the mutants: "So they're aliens?"
April replies: "No they're turtles."
And in a surprise cameo, Whoopi Goldberg asks: "Anything else we should know about?"
"Yes," April declares. "They're ninjas."
The superhero film co-stars Alan Ritchson, Jeremy Howard, Pete Ploszek, Danny Woodburn, William Fichtner, and Noel Fisher.
The movie, directed by Jonathan Liebesman, hits theatres on August 8.
