Maz Quinn and Caryn Lin on TV3's Dancing with the Stars.
Professional surfer Maz Quinn became the first contestant to exit Dancing With the Stars last night, after he failed impress judges with his cha cha.
Herald writer Calum Henderson described the surfer's performance as: "A bit like a sea lion who's been taken out of his natural habitat by the circus, forced to wear a little suit and dance for the amusement of a delirious crowd.
"The fear and confusion in his eyes last week was heartbreaking. He looks more comfortable in this week's Uptown Funk cha-cha, which either means he's getting more comfortable on the dancefloor, or his spirit has finally been broken."
If his spirit wasn't broken before, it probably is now. We caught up with the surfer as he hangs up his dancing shoes.
To be honest no, that thought never crossed my mind. I'm so wired to think positively and confidently which just comes from being extremely competitive. Well it could of been anyone in the bottom half really, the judges scores count for 50% and the votes 50%, so much could have changed.
What's been the hardest part about this experience?
Well that's easy, being the first to leave the competition. I'm so used to being one of the best in my sport, so going home first really stung. I'm just so competitive with anything I do, even if I do something for the first time I always expect to do it well. It's not being cocky it's just being confident.
Of all the judges' comments, was there anything that really stung? Why?
To be honest I don't dwell on negative comments I only took on positive ones. But Hayley definitely came up with some beauties.
What was your favourite thing about being on the show?
Getting completely out of my comfort zone which never happens and was a huge step for me. Just putting yourself out there doing something for the very first time to be watched by the nation takes some courage. Also helping out my charity Surf Life Saving NZ.
And least favourite?
Going home first, and the two-inch Cuban heels.
Who are you picking to win?
Siobhan looks amazing at dancing and looks to be picking it up so quickly, really naturally talented. Also Chrystal as she's got a huge social media backing and can dance. The wild card is Simon after that performance Sunday night, wow what difference a week makes. So stoked for him.
Give us some behind-the-scenes goss - what do people at home not know about the other contestants?
