Blockbuster season kicks off next week with the release of Spielberg's new blockbuster, Ready Player One. It's going to be movie mayhem as blockbuster after blockbuster hit the big screen. Here's our top picks for what not to miss in the next couple of months.
A Quiet Place
What genre? Very scary horror Who's in it? Emily Blunt, John Krasinski. What's it about? A family is cooped up and cowering in their house while being stalked by an evil presence. Because it hunts by sound they have to stay deathly quiet or else it's game over, man. Why we want to see it? This looks quietly terrifying. Expect this eerie silence to only be broken by sudden blasts of ferocious noise that scare the bejeezus out of you. It's sitting on a sweet 100 per cent Rotten Tomato rating and The Hollywood Reporter assured moviegoers they'll "have the pants scared off them". Our recommendation: wear a belt. When: April 5
What genre? Superhero extravaganza Who's in it? Every actor who's ever pulled on spandex and entered Marvel's cinematic universe. What's it about? No idea. It's the culmination of ten years worth of Marvel movies and it all got a bit convoluted. The vague gist is that Thanos - the big scary alien dude - is doing something with those glowing blue stones every Marvel movie is always about finding/getting/retrieving. The only way to save the day is for all of Marvel's superheroes to join forces. So they do. Why we want to see it? Because it stars all of the superheroes. All of them. True, Avengers 2 was a fizzer but the sheer scale of this one can't be ignored. When: April 25
The Breaker Upperers
What genre? Anti-rom com Who's in it? Madeleine Sami, Jackie van Beek What's it about? It follows the two proprietors of a business that specialises in breaking up relationships. Everything is going swimmingly until one of the pair breaks the first rule of being a breaker upperer and starts developing feels for one of their clients. Ruh-roh. Why we want to see it? After watching the trailer how can you not want to see it? Local comedy heroes Sami and van Beek can do no wrong in our book. But don't take our word for it; after a successful premiere at South by Southwest festival influential movie site Film School Rejects dubbed it "one of the funniest films I've seen this year (or last)." When: May 3
Solo: A Star Wars Story
What genre? Space western, apparently Who's in it? Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clarke What's it about? Young Han Solo and young Chewbacca get up to ker-rrazy space hi jinks with a young Lando Calrissian in a galaxy far, far away. Why we want to see it? Because ... Star Wars. When: May 25
Ocean's 8
What genre? Feminheist comedy Who's in it? Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway What's it about? A rag-tag team of eight pro con-women assemble to pull off the perfect heist and take home one last big score. Why we want to see it? Heist films are always slick fun and this spin-off from what I guess we now have to call the Ocean's Cinematic Universe has a cast that's pure gold. When: June 2
The Incredibles 2
What genre? Super animated adventure Who's in it? Voices of: Holly Hunter, Samuel L. Jackson, What's it about? A family of superheroes balance their personal lives with that of saving the world. With Syndrome defeated in the previous film, a new villain arises, the not very nice-sounding Underminer. Woooooo. Why we want to see it? The Incredibles was, for want of a better word, incredible. It put a new spin on the superhero genre, featured amazing animation and told a cracking yarn. It's taken Pixar 14 years to craft the sequel so we're pretty sure it's going to be super duper. When: June 28.
