Mandopop star A-Mei spreads love in NZ

Mandopop diva and gay rights champion A-Mei has marked her first New Zealand performance by posting a picture of a rainbow framing the Auckland skyline to social media.

The symbolic Instagram tribute was parting nod to one of the touring Taiwanese-born music star's gay pride songs, Rainbow.

Best known for promoting gay rights through music, the songstress played in Auckland on Sunday as her international "aMei-Amit Utopia World Tour" hit town.

Dubbed the Pride of Taiwan 'A-Mei' Chang Hui Mei is hailed as the reigning queen of Mandopop.

She is best known as a champion for gay rights and has an alter ego, rocker queen Amit, which she uses in her show to promote "equal love for all".

The 43-year-old pop diva was last year crowned Best Mandarin Female Singer at Taiwan's 26th Golden Melody Awards, and is the only Chinese performer to have received a World Peace Music Award.

Before the weekend's one and only show promoter Bevan Chuang was certain New Zealand would wow the artist.

"New Zealanders will get to see one of the biggest pop divas in the Chinese-speaking world, and we expect New Zealand will leave a lasting impression on A-Mei."

As a celebration of love, the pop diva was expected to perform Rainbow, a song that supported gay love and a tribute to those suffering because of a lack of equal rights.

Miss Chuang said Utopia was a concert that promoted equal love for all, and A-Mei hoped to achieve this through her music.
