Man falls from roof at Six60 gig

Six60's return to Dunedin's student quarter was marred when a man watching the gig suffered moderate to serious injuries when he fell from a roof.

Hundreds of young people packed the backyard of 660 Castle St, with dozens climbing on to the roofs of surrounding houses to get a better view, as the band returned to play a gig last night at the address it took its name from.

Campus Watch members and police looked on as the gig raged on, with a police officer climbing on to a roof at one point to hail down the most precariously perched.

A man, aged about 20, was transported to Dunedin Hospital with moderate to serious injuries after falling from a building in Castle St about 8pm, a St John Ambulance spokesman said.

Acting Senior Sergeant Jared Kirk, from the southern district command centre, said the mixing of alcohol and climbing on roofs was a concern.

"It was only a couple of years ago that a roof collapsed in Hyde St," he said.

Police had been made aware of the "well-organised" gig ahead of time and quite a few police resources were on hand to make sure it did not get out of control, he said.

Six60 started playing about 8.30pm and finished about 9pm, with the gig coming ahead of the release of their sophomore album today.
