KEY POINTS:
Sir Paul McCartney's handwritten lyrics for Maxwell's Silver Hammer have sold for US$192,000 ($282,000) at auction. The lyrics, which had been estimated to fetch US$200,000-$300,000, were the top lot in a sale of rock and pop memorabilia at Christie's in New York.
A Fender Stratocaster guitar with a sunburst finish owned by Jimi Hendrix went for US$168,000.
However a page from a 13-year-old Britney Spears' junior high school notebook did not do so well.
It had been expected to fetch US$500-700 but only made US$240. A collection of Bob Dylan memorabilia from his former girlfriend and including personal notes, love letters and poems, made US$116,640.
