Lou Pearlman, credited with starting the boy-band craze and launching the careers of the Backstreet Boys and 'NSync, has died in prison while serving a 25-year sentence for a massive Ponzi scheme.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that according to a federal inmate database, the 62-year-old Pearlman died on Friday.

The cause of death was not immediately known.
Pearlman's US $300 million (NZ $412.5 million) Ponzi scheme through his Trans Continental companies was uncovered in 2006. He was convicted of fraud in 2008.
