Lorde's Royals edges closer to US number one

Kiwi songstress Lorde is five places closer to a dream No. 1 spot on the US singles charts.

The 16-year-old Kiwi singer's hit single Royals soared to No. 3 on Billboard's charts this week, up five places from last week's No. 8 spot.

Only Katy Perry's Roar, at No. 1, and Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines, at No. 2, stand in front of her.

Billboard, which features Lorde on its front cover on this week's issue, reported Royals was No. 1 on the Digital Gainer charts, No. 2 on Digital Songs, and reached No. 8 on the Streaming Songs charts.

It also hit No. 13 on the Radio Songs charts with 72 million plays in the US over the week.

It has been top of the Alternative Songs airplay chart for five weeks - equalling the solo female record held by Alanis Morissette's You Oughta Know since 1995.

It's the second reason for Lorde to celebrate today: Royals also earned a spot in the finals of the Apra Silver Scroll awards.

After headlining the iHeartRadio free gig at Vector Arena on Saturday night, Lorde has embarked on a six-week UK and US promotional trip.
