Lorde has hit back at fans demanding new music from her, saying she's "working like a dog" to finish her new album.
In a now-deleted social media post, she also reportedly told fans to "give up on me if you want".
The Kiwi pop star, 19, published and then apparently deleted her comments after posting a holiday snap on Instagram that had fans wondering why she was taking time off.
It's been three years since Lorde's debut, Pure Heroine, and her hit single, Royals, turned her into a chart-topping pop star in 2013.
Aside from the occasional guest spot and soundtrack appearance, little has been heard from her, leading to impatient fans ask Lorde why she was taking a break.
"We just want one song," wrote one. "When the new music coming out?" wrote a second.
A third went all-caps to say: "WHERE'S THE NEW ALBUM?"
NME.com reported Lorde finally responded to a fan who asked: "Do you think we will ever get another album or should we just give up on you as an artist?"
She replied, saying her music took time to perfect.
"Give up on me if you want to! I write a record when I have enough special stories to tell, and it's all me, every melody every lyric, not some team who just start the machine up every eighteen months like clockwork," she wrote.
"The record is written, we're in the production stage now. I've worked like a dog for a year making this thing great for you guys."
She ended her post with a smiley sun emoji.
Lorde has given fans occasional updates on how the new album is going, recently tweeting that she'd made a breakthrough after spending three days alone.
She also whispered the album title to her mum in a car at the beginning of the year.
Lorde's last single was on Disclosure's song Magnets, released in September last year.
