Lorde has high hopes for today's AMAs

Lorde may be about to add new awards to her already impressive list at the American Music Awards.

The 18-year-old singer - whose real name is Ella Yellich-O'Connor - has been asking fans on Twitter to vote for her.

She is nominated for Artist of the Year, Favourite Female Artist, Favourite Album and Favourite Artist in the Alternative Rock categories.

Lorde won six awards at the New Zealand Music Awards last week.

She has tweeted she will be attending the American Music Awards at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, which kick off around 5pm (NZ time) today.

Lorde faces stiff competition in the artist of the year category with Aussie rapper Iggy Azalea, One Direction, Katy Perry and Beyonce.

Lil Wayne is expected to premiere his latest single, Start a Fire, Nicki Minaj will be joined by Skylar Grey for their recently released single, Bed of Lies, and Taylor Swift will perform Blank Space, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Swift will become the first-ever recipient of the Dick Clark Award for Excellence during the broadcast.
