And to think it all began as a passing fad ...
The internet is helping bring Kiwi talent to the world once again, with Brooke Fraser's album Albertine scaling the iTunes USA album charts last week.
The album, which has gone five-times platinum in New Zealand since its release in 2006, made it to number five on the iTunes charts last week, behind Coldplay and John Mayer.
Fraser has been focusing her attention on the American market recently, playing a string of small, sold-out showcases across the continent earlier this year.
The success comes just two months after Kiwi rapper Savage stormed the American iTunes charts with his single Swing.
Meanwhile, 17-year-old filmmaker Levi Beamish of Kerikeri is making his mark on the world, with his short film Perfection becoming one of the most viewed New Zealand YouTube videos of all time.
The poetic video, which was created for the 48Hour Furious Filmmaking competition, seems to have struck a chord with viewers, racking up more than 270,900 views since it was added last month.
