Monopoly has been entertaining families for more than 100 years, but it's not a game you would associate with having a plot.
Game maker Hasbro sees differently: it has lined up their classic board game as one of their next movie properties.
New Zealand-born screenwriter Andrew Niccol has been tapped to write the screenplay, Variety reports.
Nicoll is best known for writing Gattaca and The Truman Show, which earned him an Oscar nomination and Bafta award.
The movie is set to revolve around a young boy from Baltic Avenue (the American equivalent of Mackay St on the New Zealand board or Whitechapel Rd on the British version) who sets out to find his fortune.
Hasbro will produce the film through their Allspark Studio. It will be financed by Lionsgate Studios, best known for producing The Hunger Games and Divergent franchises.
A Monopoly movie has been attempting to get off the ground since 2009. Blade Runner director Ridley Scott was originally set to produce but was not mentioned in this latest announcement.
Hasbro has seen success in recent years after the Transformers franchise became a mega-hit at the box office.
They're also working on a Jem and the Holograms remake and a sequel to last year's horror flick Ouija.
No word yet on if the thimble or wheelbarrow will be characters.
