A New Zealand-based film, The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep, took in more than US$2 million ($2.63 million) on its first day in the United States.
The movie was partly filmed in Queenstown and Wellington, with help from award-winning Weta Digital. The film tells the story of a Scottish boy during World War II who finds an unusual egg that hatches a monster. It opened in 2772 cinemas across the US on Christmas Day.
