A new festival is using music from up-and-coming bands to keep environmental activism alive in West Auckland.
Ruby Frost, Artisan Guns, The Vietnam War and Lisa Crawley are among the 11 bands set to play at Viva Waitakere in Henderson Park on Sunday.
The free festival was set up as a way to preserve the "eco-city" ideas that thrived in Waitakere before it was absorbed into the Auckland Super City.
It is championed by former 18-year Waitakere mayor Bob Harvey and Auckland deputy mayor Penny Hulse.
Organiser Tim Gregory said he hoped the crowd of up to 6000 expected to attend would take part in on site environmental initiatives including native tree planting.
