It has been the year of celebrity weddings, with superstars such as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, and George Clooney all tying the knot.

However, it is Kim Kardashian and Kanye West that can say they are this year's most 'liked' couple - on Instagram at least - as Kim's snap of their Florence wedding has been named the most popular of the social media app.

The social media app revealed that the May wedding's intimate image at 16th-century Fort Belvedere gained a staggering 2.4 million likes - the highest amount of 2014 and also the most since the picture-sharing app launched over four years ago.

The weekend-long European event had guests like Kim's famous family members and stars such as John Legend, Serena Williams, and Carmelo Anthony attend.

The pair have gotten global attention since going public with their romance in 2012 as well as the shocking pregnancy and subsequent birth of daughter, North West, in 2013.

Another famous couple, Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber, are Instagram's runners-up with nearly 1.9 million likes given to their sweet photo together.

Though not indulging in a PDA Justin had uploaded the photo with Selena during a time when the twosome were making headlines for their tumultuous on-again-off-again relationship.

And in third place, a photo of unexpected friends Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus sharing a smooch at the 2014 American MTV Video Music Awards.

With just over 1.8 million likes, the twosome have some of the most devoted fans in the music industry.

Both hitmakers played a major role during the awards show - Ariana with her performance and Miley with her advocacy for homeless youth charity, My Friend's Place

In keeping with the tender theme of the most popular photos of the year, the most used hashtag was "love."
