KEY POINTS:
Hosted by Justin Timberlake and featuring performances by the likes of Gwen Stefani and Akon, the annual Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards are currently underway in Los Angeles.
Celebrities Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Jessica Alba, Queen Latifah, Hilary Duff and Ryan Seacrest will be among those participating.
Grammy Award-winning superstar Gwen Stefani and popular singer-songwriter Akon were expected to ignite the young crowd with hits from their latest albums.
It's not a Nickelodeon event without green "slime", however, and American Idol host Ryan Seacrest is set to host something called the World Record Slime Stunt.
And in the first-ever interactive sliming, Nickelodeon will put goo-gushing in kids' hands by asking viewers to vote on nick.com for the drenching mode of this year's secret celebrity "slimee", then sit back for the real-time spectacle.
The 2007 slime recipient will join an exallted list of stars who've been sloshed in the past, including Jack Black, Robin Williams, Johnny Depp, Mike Myers, Adam Sandler, Tom Cruise, Jim Carrey, James Earl Jones, Rosie O'Donnell, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Will Ferrell and Ben Stiller.
Australian junior naturalist Bindi Irwin, famously "slimed" at last year's awards, has returned for today's event.
In the early going, Dakota Fanning won favourite female movie star and the Black Eyed Peas won favourite musical group.
And host Justin Timberlake couldn't avoid the green slime.
Timberlake rode over the crowd and on to the stage on Nickelodeon's signature orange blimp, and sang, Broadway-style: "You'll never get a drop of slime on old J.T."
A fountain of the green stuff spewed up from the stage and soaked Timberlake and his tuxedo in the song's final notes.
"This wasn't what we rehearsed!" he yelled, to the delightful shrieks of the predominantly pre-teen audience.
