KEY POINTS:
What was the writing process for Beautiful Future?
Somehow the songs we wrote turned out to be very melodic and pop. Why that happened I really don't know. I don't know about other bands but we don't really speak to each other. We don't need to, it's kind of unspoken. The way things come about is quite magical, actually.
Change seems to be a Primal Scream trademark; was it an aim to make Beautiful Future different from previous albums?
Well, that's pretty important but we don't really go out of our way to make it so. It would be great to say that before we go in to write each album we have a grand concept and an idea of what we're doing, but we don't. We kind of just make it up as we go along.
Why did you record in Abba's old studio?
We went there because Bjorn [Yttling, producer] said it was a good studio. It had a great sounding room and Janne [Hansson] the engineer has worked there since '72 or '73. He owns the studio so he knows where to put every microphone.
When you wrote I Love To Hurt did you have Lovefoxxx from CSS in mind?
We had the song written, then we asked her to sing on it. We also asked her to write a verse for it. I gave her the rest of the lyrics, and let her make her own mind up about what the song was about and add to it. It's one of my favourites.
How did the cover of Fleetwood Mac's Over and Over come about?
We wanted to do a version of it, 'cause it felt good to sing. We also thought the melody was really Scottish. It's got that beautiful melodic lilt to it. So we recorded our own version, which is a bit more broken and fractured.
How did Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age become a part of Necro Hex Blues?
When the Queens of The Stone Age played in London, Josh had a night off and he came over for a jam. We wrote a song, and recorded that in Stockholm. Using the wonders of modern technology, we put Josh's guitar in there.
You've been making music for almost 25 years. Where does the passion come from?
It can be the greatest fun in the world when it all comes together. You're playing half an hour, 45 minutes, you've got nothing, no one's playing anything that you think is any good. And suddenly the whole thing just comes together at once.
