Keisha Castle-Hughes' television show Roadies has been canned after one season

After just one season, Roadies, which starred Kiwi actress Keisha Castle-Hughes, has been cancelled.

The 26-year-old Whale Rider star played "punk funk lesbian" sound engineer Donna Mancini in Cameron Crowe's (Say Anything, Almost Famous) firstTV series.

It was a behind-the-scenes drama, following the crew working for a successful rock band, but it never really found its feet, drawing low ratings from viewers and mixed reviews from critics.

Variety's Maureen Ryan wrote that the show "feels like a Spotify playlist in search of a reason to exist".

The 10-episode season wrapped in August with the finale bringing in just more than 500,000 viewers, according to Nielsen's "Live +3" ratings.

In a post online, Crowe wrote: "Thanks to Showtime and JJ Abrams for the opportunity to make the one and only season of Roadies. My mind is still spinning from the giddy highs of working with this epic cast and crew.

"Though we could tell a thousand more stories, this run ends with a complete 10-hour tale of music and love."

Castle-Hughes took to Twitter to acknowledge the end of Roadies, writing: "My [Roadies] family. I am so proud of what we achieved. Love you deep! Rock on forever mother******s!"
