We love his Paul Holmes impersonations on the telly in the slapstick manner of Bruce Forsyth, but can Jason Gunn's physical style of entertainment translate across the airwaves on his Classic Hits radio breakfast show in Christchurch? Radio survey results show listeners to his 97.7FM breakfast show are down a whopping 33 per cent from last year. The prolific entertainer reckons he doesn't pay much attention to ratings. "But ask me in a year or 18 months," he said.
Gunn joined Classic Hits Christchurch in December on the back of his fame and pulling power as a media personality. He began co-hosting The Classic Breakfast show with his long-time friend Tim Dyer from the end of January.
The drop in listeners to the show (21,200 listeners last year down to 14,100 this year) will be worrying to bosses in the industry who measure success on research reviews. Admittedly, the survey ran until March 28 and Gunn had only been at the helm for around two months. Still, a loss of a third of your audience must be a massive blow to the celebrity.
But the TV star is taking it all in his stride. "You've got to win listeners over," Gunn said matter-of-factly of his foray into radio. "Any new venture is a marathon not a sprint."
The results are the first for Gunn to gauge how well his radio performance is going since jumping back into a career on the airwaves (he worked at More FM in Christchurch in 1995) alongside his TV appearances. But it doesn't bode well, especially as his television shows Wheel of Fortune and The Rich List have both been axed by TVNZ at the same time the TV star and his wife Janine Morrell-Gunn opened a $7 million purpose-built, state-of-the-art television production and post-production studio in Christchurch.
Gunn wouldn't talk about his contract with Classic Hits, but Spy understands he was employed by the station on a fixed contract for a three-year period on a hefty salary of $300,000 a year which, if true, means this million-dollar-man needs to bring in the goods if the station is to make a return on their investment. Gunn would not comment about the terms of his contract.
"It's not an overnight thing and I'm not resting on my laurels. We are doing things that have never been done before. The best things take time."
