Jack Tame and Hilary Barry are due to be announced as TVNZ's new Breakfast hosts - but won't be on-air until 2017.

Jack Tame and Hilary Barry are due to be announced as the new hosts of Breakfast next week - but won't be on-air together until next year.

Sources have told the Herald TVNZ is planning to announce the news next week.

But viewers will have to wait a little longer to see the pair on-screen together, with the hosts not due to start until January.

It's unclear whether current hosts Rawdon Christie and Nadine Chalmers-Ross will stay with the programme until then.

In 2010, following Paul Henry's departure, a series of hosts were brought in to sit alongside Pippa Wetzel before new hosts Corin Dann and Petra Bagust took over in January 2011.

Insiders say it's likely the same will happen again, with the show expected to "limp along" until the end of the year.

Christie and Chalmers-Ross were told their time on the Breakfast couch was up last week, following a meeting with TVNZ news boss John Gillespie.

It's understood the pair were given the option to leave then but both chose to keep going, hosting the programme this week.

New York-based Newstalk ZB host Tame arrived back in New Zealand last week to fill-in for Mike Hosking on Seven Sharp but is understood to be leaving again soon.

It's expected he will cover the US election in November before returning to New Zealand later this year.

TVNZ declined to comment on the story.
