The English town made famous by spoof rapper Ali G has been accused of being pretentious for changing its name.
Staines, located just west of London, has officially changed its name to Staines-upon-Thames in a bid to enhance the town's image.
Councillors voted for the change last year because of the Surrey town's links with Sacha Baron Cohen's comic creation.
"Ali G may have had a role, but I think it goes back further than that," Councillor Colin Davis told the BBC. He said the new name would help people understand its riverside connection.
"I regard Ali G as someone who put Staines on the map, we're just telling people where it is," he said.
