Kate Winslet is nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for
The Reader.
She plays Hanna Schmitz, a German woman in her thirties whose teenage lover is unaware of the dark secret in her past. Although this is Winslet's sixth Oscar nomination, it would be her first win. She was however awarded a Critics Choice, BAFTA, Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe for her part in
The Reader.
At 33, Winslet is the youngest actress ever to have six Oscar nominations. The British actress burst onto the movie screen in 1997 alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in
Titanic
, which made them both household names. Since then she has appeared in
Finding Neverland, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
and
Iris
.
