Verdict: If you like Battles, try this, but does not include chipmunks
Don't worry, the record isn't stuck - it's just that the first track is the same riff repeated for nearly two minutes.
That's not music and it's certainly not disco, I hear you scream.
And you'd be right. My Disco are a trio of bent and twisted Australians creating mechanical, and sometimes maniacal music, similar to Battles.
However, My Disco have a furrowed brow intensity compared to Battles' more tongue-in-cheek approach.
In fact, Paradise is all together more nasty than those New York crazies and recalls the berserk noise punk of New Zealanders Die!Die!Die!.
The nastiness factor is exaggerated more by producer Steve Albini's minimal and cold recording techniques.
The oddly titled / churns along with jagged lashes of guitars; nine-minute noise epic An Even Sun is punctuated by shards of discord and more bludgeoning repetitive beats; there's a more melodic side to tracks like Mosaics and You Came To Me Like A Cancer; and eerie outro Land, with the mantra, "It flew, until it fell" is just plain weird.
Not for everyone, but for fans of bands dubbed math rock, this is a must.
