KEY POINTS:
Walking away from Vector Arena last night, two questions plagued my mind.
Firstly, what is up with Anthony Kiedis' moustache? And secondly, and probably more poignantly, what happened to the Chilis?
Okay, it wasn't a bad night out. At times the band had the crowd in a state of pure euphoria, waving cell phones and lighters, singing along en masse, worshipping the Californian rockers.
But those times were few and far between and too often the crowd was left waiting, listening to instrumental filler, while Kiedis composed himself and got ready for his next kangaroo-hopping display.
While Frusciante and Flea attempted to talk to the audience (the sound levels made it impossible to understand a word they were saying), Kiedis shunned his role as frontman, uttering less than two sentences the entire night.
The real kick in the teeth though, had to be the finale - or lack thereof. After a rehearsed ten-minute absence, where the crowd chanted incessantly for Kiedis and co to return, the band finally emerged to play Give It Away.
Alas, that was the end of the road for Kiedis, who silently walked off stage, never to be seen again, leaving the rest of the band playing a unique, if somewhat self-indulgent, jam session.
It was a drawn out end to a drawn out night. And for the 12,000 fans who queued on street corners, sat glued to computer screens, and frantically re-dialled ticket lines, it has to be said, it was a bit of a letdown.
