KEY POINTS:
Actors of stage and screen filled the Aotea Centre on Saturday night to celebrate the opening night of the Royal Shakespeare Company's King Lear, starring Sir Ian McKellen.
It has been 10 years since the company last performed in Auckland and the production's four-show season has sold out.
Sir Ian thanked everyone involved in the production for making the cast feel so welcome and for supporting the tour.
Several local actors attended the opening night to see Sir Ian at work, including Jennifer Ward-Lealand, Michael Hurst, Theresa Healey and Elizabeth McRae.
They mingled with the RSC cast and crew, including award-winning actress Romola Garai and former Dr Who star Sylvester McCoy.
HIGHLIGHT
Spending an evening in the company of so many well-spoken (and rather gorgeous-looking) individuals. Does make a change.
LOWLIGHT
The intoxicated students surrounding the Aotea Centre, where they had attended their school ball.
