KEY POINTS:
The after-party for the opening night of an Australian production of Fiddler on the Roof was a late affair held at The Civic's Winter Garden on Tuesday.
But even after a high-energy performance, the cast and crew were still on a high and a number said they were delighted to be performing in Auckland City's beautiful Civic Theatre.
Fiddler on the Roof is one of the longest running musicals in Broadway history and Israeli actor Topol has played the role of a poor Russian-Jewish farmer around the world for 30 years.
The Auckland audience was impressed and gave Topol, and the excellent 35-strong cast accompanied by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, a standing ovation.
Fiddler on the Roof follows the journey of a family who have their traditional life turned upside down as the modern world starts to affect life in their idyllic village. Its celebrated score features songs loved the world over such as Sunrise Sunset, If I Were a Rich Man (one of the most recognised songs from any musical) and Matchmaker, a monster hit for Barbra Streisand.
The musical's season at the Civic ends next Saturday.
