KEY POINTS:
The opening of new auction house Art and Object was held at its premises in Newton last night.
Art and Object is the first new auction house to open in 30 years and the owners say it's time for some new blood to reinvigorate the industry.
Set up by four former staff members of the iconic local auction house Webb's, the focus of James Parkinson, Ross Millar, Ben Plumbly and Hamish Coney is to modernise the auction industry with a focus on contemporary art and applied arts (pottery and glass) without the exclusion of historical pieces.
Parkinson says he wants to establish a 21st- century auction house, one that is curator-driven, displays well and has more manageable sized lots.
Its first sale, Contemporary Art and Objects, opens on May 3 with 120 lots including a strong contingent of contemporary New Zealand artists - Shane Cotton, Bill Hammond, Michael Parekowhai, Len Castle and Martin Popperwell.
Later in the month there will be a New Collectors Art auction for works under $5000.
