KEY POINTS:
Peter Williams reads the news on TV One's Breakfast. He shares his book of the moment with us.
The book I love most is...
The Greatest Game Ever Played by Mark Frost. He became famous as the writer of the TV series Hill Street Blues and Twin Peaks. But like me, he has a passionate interest in the history of golf and this dramatised non-fiction work tells the unlikely story of Francis Ouimet's surprise win in the 1913 US Open.
Ouimet was a 20-year-old unknown amateur who lived across the road from the course in Boston and he beat the legendary British players Harry Vardon and Ted Ray in a playoff to become the first amateur to win the title. Ouimet's tense relationship with his father, who didn't want him to play golf, and friendship with his 10-year old caddy Eddie Lowery, who wagged school to carry Ouimet's bag before becoming a millionaire car dealer in San Francisco, are examined in fascinating detail.
The book I'm reading right now is...
Katherine Mansfield - a Secret Life by Claire Tomalin. My initial interest in the subject was in the interests of household harmony - my wife's PhD dissertation was on the life and works of the famous New Zealand-born short story writer.
The book I'd like to read next is...
Atonement by Ian McEwan. Loved the movie and we have the book at home. Did McEwan really intend Briony Tallis to be as much of a little bitch as the movie portrayed her?
