Openly gay British actor Ian McKellen once turned down a £1.5 million (NZ$3.5m) offer to dress up as his Lord Of The Rings character and marry a wealthy couple.
The star officiated close friend Patrick Stewart's wedding to jazz singer Sunny Ozell in 2013, but admits it's not something he wants to do regularly.
"I married a gay couple in the UK and I was asked to dress up as Gandalf and go and perform a marriage by a very rich man who offered me one and a half million dollars to do that and I said, 'No'.
"I'm an actor, not a minister."
McKellen has starred as Gandalf in three Lord of the Rings movies, and the trilogy's three Hobbit sequels.
