On My Block is a classic, all-American coming-of-age story, but this time features people of colour. It borrows from much-loved features like Sixteen Candles and The Goonies, while flipping the genre on its head as four young teens navigate high school, puberty, sex and parties ... as well as gang life, street violence and racism. As such, it gives a nod to John Hughes and 80s nostalgia, with shockingly harsh reminders that "only white kids find treasure". It shows that people of colour live shared experiences, but they also have separate experiences that cannot be discounted. That, and it's just fun and compelling to watch.
