KEY POINTS:
Known for its blazing sun, sparkling waters and endless summers, you can't go past Northland for a classic Kiwi summer holiday.
Just over two hours' drive north of Auckland, Whangarei Heads is a prime destination, comprising an array of white sand beaches, clean surf and lush green forests.
The area features several harbour beaches, including Parua Bay, McLeod Bay, Reotahi, Taurikura and Urquhart Bay _ all just 30 minutes from Whangarei town.
Ocean Beach is a surfer's paradise, with clean and reliable breaks.
The area is also a boating hot spot, with water-skiers, wakeboarders, divers and anglers flocking to the region.
In particular, Tutukaka and the Poor Knights Islands are favourite destinations for divers and game fishers.
Those looking to sit back and soak in the good life will want to check out the Pataua Olive Grove, where tastings and tours are available throughout summer.
The Parua Bay Tavern is also worth a visit. With uninterrupted views of the water, there is no better place to settle in for an afternoon session.
Art lovers can check out the Whangarei Heads art trail, which features nine local galleries, while the aerobically inclined can tackle Mt Manaia.
Approximately a 90-minute walk, the summit offers exceptional views of the headland and surrounding region.
Alternatively, for a gentler option, head to Smugglers Cove, just a 15-minute walk from the south end of Urquharts Bay.
