HBO finally released the trailer for its upcoming series Westworld

HBO took full advantage of the audience tuning in for today's Game of Thrones episode, seizing the moment to drop a promo for its new series.

The highly anticipated Westworld was introduced ahead of the latest episode of Thrones on HBO, and it already looks like it could fill the void of Thrones after its final episode airs next week.

Westworld - all the fun of a Western with all the drama of sci-fi.

Based on the 1973 Michael Crichton film of the same name, Westworld mixes the best of two worlds so you get some gun-slinging Western action, as well as some futuristic, high-tech action.

But speaking at a Television Critics Association press tour, HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said the series flips the film on its head.

"[With] the film ... you were very invested in one particular group of humans that were enjoying the park and their experience with the robots. This is not that. This is very much told from the point of view of the robots," he said.

Nothing like an old-fashioned Western.

"Without giving more than that away, I think all I can say is only one character that you saw in the clip is a visitor to the park. And yeah, it resembles the film in name and in spirit and but really is, I think, otherwise not much of a reference point."

The 10-episode series stars Anthony Hopkins as an inventor who runs an adult amusement park, filled with human-like robots - some of which are played by the likes of James Marsden, Thandi Newton, Ed Harris and Evan Rachel Wood.

This is Anthony Hopkins' first role as a television series-regular.

According to The Hollywood Reporter the robots can die and come back with totally different personalities, which allows the actors to tackle multiple characters in the same show.

HBO says Westworld "explores a world in which every human appetite, no matter how noble or depraved, can be indulged."
