Great Gatsby delay rules it out of Oscars

The trailers have delivered Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby some Oscar buzz but it won't be a contender for the 2013 Academy Awards, after Warner Bros pushed back its US release date.

The epic 3D re-imagining of the F Scott Fitzgerald classic, shot in Sydney, stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan.

The Hollywood Reporter says Warner distribution president Dan Fellman announced Gatsby will not be released on December 25, as previously scheduled, but some time in the northern summer of 2013.

Fellman said Luhrmann's work had been all the studio was expecting and more.

"It truly brings Fitzgerald's American classic to life in a completely immersive, visually stunning and exciting way," he said.

"We think moviegoers of all ages are going to embrace it, and it makes sense to ensure this unique film reaches the largest audience possible."

The website speculated the release of Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, also starring DiCaprio, also on December 25, may have led to the decision.

In Australia The Great Gatsby is currently scheduled to be released on January 10, and Django Unchained on January 24.
