KEY POINTS:
Castaway, one of the biggest TV series commissioned by the BBC in 2007, is to be filmed in New Zealand.
The second series of the reality TV show will be staged on Great Barrier Island, in the Hauraki Gulf.
The Department of Conservation (DOC) has approved the application from Lion Television, on behalf of the BBC, to film on the island following a thorough process to ensure the area will be well protected.
"Tourism New Zealand has been assisting the production team in sourcing locations, and we are delighted they have chosen New Zealand to film this show," said Tourism New Zealand chief executive George Hickton.
It was a great opportunity to promote conservation values to both national and international audiences, he said.
"This is one of our treasured places, and Castaway presents us with an opportunity to show it off to the world," said DOC Great Barrier area manager Dale Tawa.
"It's also important the special character of the reserve and the island is maintained, and we have put strong measures in place to ensure it will be well protected during filming."
Castaway's first series was filmed in 2000 on a Scottish island. A group of 36 people spent a year on the island fending for themselves.
Seven participants left during the course of the year.
Castaway executive producer Jeremy Mills said Lion Television was "very excited" about filming in New Zealand.
"The biggest thrill for our contributors will be not knowing exactly where on the island they will be based and their surprise and awe at finding themselves in such a beautiful location."
Lion Television said they would use locals for labour, transport and accommodation during filming.
