The Grammys are in fashion terms, quite unlike any other awards ceremony.

Where other major events including the BAFTAs and the Golden Globes, attract a rather formal dress code, at the Grammys all rules are thrown out of the window.

In previous years that has meant a rather eclectic parade of attendees; from the dare to bare stars (think Rihanna or JLo) to the frankly bizarre (Lady Gaga in an egg).

And whilst at tonight's ceremony there was no giant egg, the red carpet was by no means a boring affair.

Madonna was an early arrival and the legendary popstar didn't disappoint wearing a Givenchy creation consisting of a corset, thigh high boots and a net headpiece.

There was a gaggle of shockers out in full force - that's what we love about this risky red carpet. Aussie singer Sia donned a massive white wig, Charlie XCX's stepped out in an 80's inspired white tux with pink accessories while Elton Castee got stuck in to some weird razor work on his legs.

Gallery: Frocks that shocked

Never one to shy away from making a statement on the red carpet, Madonna went matador in Givenchy. Double gasp when she turned her back.
Charlie XCX wanted to do something "80s and fabulous," and she nailed it, picking a Moschino white tuxedo with a pink bowtie, pale pink fur stole and sparkling pink heels. "I hate boring fashion!" she told Giuliana on the red carpet.
Aoyama Thelma has a heck of a lot going on here.
Lemmy Kilmister from Motorhead couldn't decide whether to come as a pirate or a cowboy. So he came as both.
Elton Castee got creative with the razor for the special occasion, showing off striped hairy pins.
Frankie J Grande walked in front of a bright pink spray gun before stepping out at the Grammy Awards.
Secret Agent 23 Skidoo in a full on family ensemble.
Brann Dailor popped in to the Grammy Awards on his way home from working as a clown at a kids' birthday party.
Pharrell has gone for a short suit again, this time in Adidas adopting the colour of the moment - white. But it's his statuesque plus one, Helen Lasichanh, who stands out in what appears to be a racecar driver's onepiece, also by Adidas.
We were talking about white, and this is how you wear too much white by, Malik Yusef.
The red is shocking enough, but is that a leather shirt, Eric Bellinger, hanging below your jacket, looking like an apron?
Aussie singer/songwriter Sia has stepped out in her massive trademark stark white hair, matching with her dancer Maddie Ziegler as they both wear custom Armani pieces.

There were also a lot of looks we really loved. Jesse J nailed gothic glam in an embellished Ralph & Russo gown with a slick side part and dark red lip. Gwen Stefani's Atelier Versace jumpsuit proves this 45-year-old mum is still rock'n'roll while RiRi got everyone talking, made a spectacular fashionably late arrival in a Giambattista Valli gown, plucked straight off last week's haute couture show in Paris.

Frocks that rocked

The three sisters from Haim - Este Haim in Chloé, Danielle Haim in Stella McCartney, and Alana Haim in Stella McCartney - are low-key lovely.
Angelique Kidjo looks awesome in this bold print dress with matching headscarf.
A sleek and sexy look from Jessie J, wearing Ralph & Russo - with an earful of rad accessories, dark red pout and slick side part.
She's a model so it's her job to look like a megababe, but once again Chrissy Teigen, in Gucci, kills it this awards season. John Legend, wearing Dolce & Gabbana, must be stoked.
Another lady rocking white is Carolyn Malachi, the simple suit makes an impact because of the way this woman carries herself, and that perfect red lip.
At 45-years-old Gwen Stefani is rocking this Atelier Versace jumpsuit.
Jhene Aiko looks a dream in this strapless dusty pink Alberta Ferretti dress, showing off the nautical ink on her toned shoulder.
Katy Perry looks glam in Zuhair Murad, but keeps it edgy with her tousled aubergine mane.
Rihanna made a grand late entrance in a spectacular blushing pink Giambattista Valli gown, plucked straight off last week's haute couture show in Paris. It's dramatic and we love it.
Firstly we love that Kim K has chopped off her locks and joined the lob alliance. She has picked a very OTT Jean Paul Gaultier gown for the Grammy Awards, and for this event, we are digging it.
Not everyone in the office is digging Iggy Azalea. But we reckon the Aussie's crown of thorns hair looks regal with the figure hugging royal blue Armani Prive dress.
It's T-Swift's perfect pins that take this asymmetric Elie Saab dress to the next level. The shiny aqua fabric isn't something we'd usually pick, but with the unlikely choice of magenta heel persuade us to kind of dig it.
Rita Ora looks like the best mirrored disco ball we've seen in a while. That platinum pixie cut looks awesome.
