KEY POINTS:
The late Australian rocker Billy Thorpe will be immortalised with a memorial at the scene of some of his greatest performances - a paddock north-west of Melbourne.
But a planned plaque in Thorpe's memory could be the beginning of bigger things for the privately-owned field at Diggers Rest, Hume, the site of the Sunbury Pop Festival of the 1970s.
Hume councillor Jack Ogilvie said the planned memorial could be the beginning of a greater recognition of the site, including a permanent stage, a music museum and monuments to other music legends.
"It could be the Australian rock scene's answer to Graceland," he said.
