What followed was inarguably a diverse - and deserving - lineup of honorees. But the ultimate winner on the night was director Steven Spielberg, whose film The Fabelmans landed him Best Director and Best Motion Picture - Drama.
First up, Jennifer Hudson presented the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture to Ke Huy Quan for his role in Everything Everywhere All at Once - his first nomination and win.
The award for Best Supporting Actress went to Angela Bassett for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
“By the grace of God, I stand here grateful,” she said in her acceptance speech, as well as paying tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman.
White Lotus star Jennifer Coolidge, herself a nominee, took to the stage to present the award for Best Supporting Actor in a TV series to Tyler James Williams for his role in Abbott Elementary.
It wasn’t the first nod to Abbott Elementary, with the Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy going to Abbott Elementary star Quinta Brunson.
A shell-shocked Brunson thanked audiences for believing in her show as well as her family, who wouldn’t stop texting her while she was on stage. The show later won Best Comedy Series, while Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon won Best Drama series.
And Michelle Yeoh took out the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once, telling the audience, “It’s been an amazing journey and incredible fight to be here today but I think it’s been worth it.”
Austin Butler won Best Actor in a Motion Picture for his lead role in Elvis - dashing the hopes of Brendan Fraser fans hoping for an awards comeback for the star.
Butler thanked Denzel Washington for helping him land the role, and his late mother, as well as the King himself, saying of Elvis, “You were an icon and a rebel and I love you so much.”
The Banshees of Inisherin - the most nominated movie of the night - won Best Motion Picture Screenplay, as well as Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical. Its lead Colin Farrell landed the Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, beating out Adam Driver and Daniel Craig.
Steven Spielberg won Best Director for The Fabelmans, beating out Avatar: The Way of Water director James Cameron.
He told the audience, “I’m really, really happy about this ... I never had the courage to hit this story head on,” referring to his childhood, which he recreates in the film.
But the final award of the night saw Spielberg take to the stage once again to accept the Globe for Best Motion Picture - Drama for The Fabelmans, again leaving Cameron’s Avatar snubbed.
Jennifer Coolidge deservedly took out Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for her role in The White Lotus.
She spoke openly about her struggle to get where she is today, telling The White Lotus creator Mike White, “You’ve given me hope even if you killed me off.”
White got the chance to thank her in return when The White Lotus won Best Limited Series. Taking to the stage, he joked that he would have done the speech in Italian, but was too drunk as there was “no food”.
