4.55pm: Julia Roberts walks onto the stage and says the best way to get a lot of texts is to sit next to Paul McCartney. She's about to present the final award: Best Film (Drama)
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: Avatar. During his acceptance speech, director James Cameron shows where the power lies. Gesturing to the band, he says they're too afraid to play him off the stage.

4.46pm: Kate Winslet arrives onstage to present the award for Best Actor in a Lead Role (Drama) - Motion Picture. The camera flies over to her Titanic co-star Leonardo DiCaprio.
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart. A standing ovation for Bridges, whose win has to be seen as a massive upset. Many people would have thought Morgan Freeman was a certainty - perhaps apart from Tobey Maguire, who was visibly disappointed.

4.38pm: Sally Hawkins is onstage to present the award for Best Actor in a Lead Role (Musical / Comedy) - Motion Picture.
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: Robert Downey Jr in Sherlock Holmes. Downey's acceptance speech tears the house down.
4.36pm: Mickey Rourke is onstage to present the award for Best Actress in a Lead Role (Drama) - Motion Picture.
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side. Bullock's well-deserved moment in the sun is cut short by the band, however.
4.34pm: The Governator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, is onstage to present a clip from Avatar, joking that half of the film's profits will go towards bailing out the state of California.

4.26pm: Hollywood sweetheart Reese Witherspoon is onstage to present the award for Best Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy.
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: The Hangover. Mike Tyson - who had a cameo appearance in the film - joins the cast and crew onstage. The Twitterverse immediately explodes with accusations of the Hollywood Foreign Press taking a populist approach to the award, rather than awarding the gong to (500) Days of Summer.

4.19pm: Olivia Wilde and Kiefer Sutherland present Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy.
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: Glee. Party time for Gleeks around the world!
A highlight from the acceptance speech: "This award is for anyone who got a wedgie in high school."
4.14pm: Ricky Gervais with another winner: "I like a drink as much as the next man. Unless the next man is Mel Gibson."
That's Mr Gibson's cue to come out to present the award for Best Director.

3.57pm: It's time to honour a screen legend. Robert DeNiro and Leonardo DiCaprio arrive to present Martin Scorsese with the Cecil B. DeMille Award. A presentation of clips from Scorsese's films clocks in at around five minutes.

3.48pm: Halle Berry glides onto the stage in a dangerously low-cut dress. She's here to present the award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role - Motion Picture.

3.46pm: Chace Crawford and Kristen Bell are onstage to present the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture made for TV.
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: Chloe Sevigny for Big Love.
3.37pm: Amy Poehler and Zachary Levi bring the banter as they get ready to present the award for Best Television Series - Drama.
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: Mad Men.
3.32pm: Samuel L. Jackson is onstage to present a clip from the "feel-good movie of the year" - Inglourious Basterds - and to welcome the legendary Sophia Loren. She is to present the award for Best Foreign Language Film.
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: The White Ribbon, directed by Michael Haneke.
3.26pm: No messing around by Jennifer Garner and Ashton Kutcher, onstage to announce the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy.
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: Alec Baldwin for 30 Rock. Unfortunately the man himself is absent, spending his evening at a charity event instead of the Globes.
3.22pm: Ricky Gervais continues his fine form, introducing Jennifer Aniston to the stage as "Rachel from Friends."
Rach... Jennifer and Gerard Butler are onstage to present the award for Best Screenplay. Gervais says this category "is a bit of a downer. It's about writers."
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner for Up in the Air.
3.10pm: Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldan from - you guessed it, Avatar - are onstage to present the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture made for Television.
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: Kevin Bacon for Taking Chance.
Sam and Zoe also present the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture made for Television.
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: Drew Barrymore for Grey Gardens. The golden girl says she's attended the awards since she was seven years old.
3.05pm: Avatar's promotional machine is in full effect, with promo spots appearing before almost every ad break. Apparently there are a few people living under the odd rock who've yet to see this.
2.59pm: Declaring that not all Irishmen are rotten drunks, Gervais introduces one of the Emerald Isle's favourite sons, Colin Farrell.
Farrell is onstage to present the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy/Musical.
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: Meryl Streep in Julie & Julia. In what may be a bid for more meaty roles, the gushing winner says she wants to change her name to "T-Bone. T-Bone Streep."
2.52pm: It's time to present the award for Best Mini Series or Film Made for TV.
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: Grey Gardens. The creative team forget about the keep-it-short precedent set by other winners and take so long to assemble onstage that they barely utter a thought before the band plays them off.
2.46pm: Cher and Christina Aguilera are onstage to shamelessly promote their film, Burlesque - and to present the award for Best Original Song.
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: The Weary Kind (the theme from Crazy Heart) by Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett.
They also present the award for Best Original Score.
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: Michael Giacchino for Up. A starstruck Giacchino says he can't believe Sir Paul McCartney said "Go Michael!"
"I don't know if I have anything else to say. That is, like, the greatest thing in my life right there."
Winners appear to be keeping their acceptance speeches short this year.
2.44pm: Ricky Gervais leaves NBC alone for a minute, instead cracking a divorce joke aimed at Sir Paul McCartney. Gervais says he and Paul McCartney flew on the same plane, but he was in first class while Macca was in economy class. Ouch!
2.32pm: Jane Krakowski and Neil Patrick Harris present Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama.
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: Michael C. Hall for Dexter.
Krakowski and Harris also present the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Drama.
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: Julianna Margulies for The Good Wife. NBC takes another verbal jab as Margulies thanks CBS for "believing in the 10 o'clock drama."
2.27pm: The lovely Kate Hudson is onstage to introduce a clip from the film Nine, a nominee for Best Comedy / Musical.
2.20pm: Sir Paul McCartney takes the opportunity to send himself up a little, introducing himself as "that guy from Rock Band." He's onstage to present the award for Best Animated Feature.
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: Up. Director Peter Docter accepts the award.
2.16pm: Lauren Graham And Jim Parsons introduce Miss Golden Globe and then present Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture made for Television.
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: John Lithgow for Dexter.
2.10pm: Ten minutes into the Golden Globes ceremony and Lost star Matthew Fox almost lost his footing on his way to the stage, thanks to co-presenter Sofia Vergara and her flowing dress. They were onstage to present the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy.
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: Toni Collette for United States of Tara.
2.05pm: Welcome to nzherald.co.nz's live coverage of the Golden Globes. After a hilarious introduction by host Ricky Gervais, who aimed a few jabs at NBC ("Let's get on with it before NBC replaces me with Jay Leno") Nicole Kidman walks onstage to present the award for Supporting Actress.
And the Golden Globe Award goes to: Mo'Nique for Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire.
