Actor Leonardo DiCaprio, got political during his acceptance speech for Best Performance in a Motion Picture - Drama.

This year's Golden Globes award ceremony was full of surprises and more than a few memorable quotes.

Host Ricky Gervais took to the stage for the fourth time having previously vowed never to accept the role again.

The comedian was sure to offend, even posting multiple warnings and apologies on Twitter prior to the event.

Lady Gaga: "I wanted to be an actress before I wanted to be a singer, but music worked out first," the singer said, taking a Golden Globe for her first major acting role, as a centenarian blood-sucker on American Horror Story: Hotel.

British director Ridley Scott: "Happy to be alive, I was beginning to think this was going to be posthumous," Ridley said on winning his first Golden Globe for The Martian.

Leonardo DiCaprio: "I want to share this award with all the first nations people represented in this film and all the indigenous communities around the world. It is time that we recognise your history and that we protect your indigenous lands from corporate interests and from people that are out there to exploit them. It is time that we heard your voice and protected this planet for future generations," DiCaprio said as he held the Globe for best actor in a motion picture drama for The Revenant.

Mel Gibson: "I love seeing Ricky once every three years because it reminds me to get a colonoscopy," the award presenter said as a perfect comeback to numerous jokes Gervais made about him.
