Game review: Wolfenstein: The New Order

Killing Nazis is fun. That's been Wolfenstein's blood-splattered call to arms since its 1981 debut, and that doesn't change on The New Order.

If you want to get blood on your hands, this first person shooter will get the job done in a variety of ridiculously sadistic ways.

New Order's developers MachineGames open with a thrilling World War II flight sequence, then fast-forward to the 60s, imagining a world in which Germany won the war.

Wolfenstein's protagonist William "B.J." Blazkowicz is tasked with righting those wrongs, overcoming all German enemies that stand in his way - and that's where Wolfenstein really shines.

Want to take on soldiers in giant mech suits? How about teeth-gnashing robot dogs, or gigantic robots the size of small skyscrapers? In Wolfenstein, you can.

For a game that comes with such simple visceral thrills, the eighth instalment isn't scared to take some risks.

For one, this version has very little to do with 2009's wayward instalment, meaning this is a bit of a reboot. Secondly, it's a single player game which will take a moderately experienced gamer around 12-14 hours to finish. There are no multiplayer options in sight.

It's nice to see Wolfenstein focus on delivering a decent story, great animation and well thought through characters -- especially after the disappointing campaigns that came with Call of Duty: Ghosts and Battlefield 4. Just don't let your grandparents watch - they won't be impressed.
