Lady Gaga had a hole in her hip the "size of a quarter" before she underwent to surgery.
The 27-year-old singer had to cancel the remaining dates of her Born This Way tour in February after suffering what was believed to be a labral tear on her right hip.
However, Gaga has now revealed her injury was far worse than it was thought at the time as she found tissue that is meant to stay between the joints hanging out on the side of her hip which itself was extremely damaged, leaving her with a hole the size of a 25 cent coin.
She told WWD.com: "I had broken my hip. Nobody knew, and I haven't even told the fans yet. But when we got all the MRIs finished before I went to surgery there were giant craters, a hole in my hip the size of a quarter, and the cartilage was just hanging out the other side of my hip. I had a tear on the inside of my joint and a huge breakage."
If the The Edge of Glory hitmaker had continued to perform her rigorous dance routines on stage she would have needed a hip replacement that would resulted in her taking more time off.
