THE ALIEN SAGA
Herald rating: * * * *
When Ridley Scott's Alien burst on to screens in 1979, it squashed many of the traditional notions of the sci-fi bug-eyed-monster movie.
For one, instead of being attached to a government project or the military, the crew of the spaceship Nostromo are all employees working for a commercial mining company.
Second, the hero of the piece is female, Warrant Officer Ellen Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver. And third, the alien itself, designed by Swiss artist and sculptor H.R. Giger, remains one of the scariest monsters ever seen in cinema.
Using crew member Kane (John Hurt) as its host, the creature grows through its various forms, including the face-hugger and chest-burster, before its anthropomorphic adult form is finally revealed.
As if that's not enough to scare you witless, it's followed by Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection. (2002)

MEET THE FOCKERS

The sequel to Meet The Parents is basically a retread of the first movie, reinforced by the inclusion of Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand as Gaylord's (Ben Stiller) parents. Two very liberal, free-thinking ex-hippies, they are at odds with Gaylord's soon-to-be father-in-law, ex-CIA operative Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro). (2004)
