SHREK
Herald rating: * * * *
New Zealand-born director Andrew Adamson wrote his own ticket to Hollywood and Narnia with this clever tale about a loveable green ogre, in the process scooping the inaugural Academy Award in 2001 for Best Animated Feature.
Voiced in a Scottish brogue by Austin Powers' star Mike Myers, Shrek is forced to leave his beloved swamp when fairytale creatures exiled by Lord Farquaad, ruler of Duloc (John Lithgow), invade his privacy. Shrek, with his annoying but hilarious sidekick Donkey (Eddie Murphy), sets off to convince Farquaad to take them back, is charged with defeating a dragon and meets the beautiful Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz).
Loaded with pop-culture references, the film uses well-known pop songs to breathe new life into the old montage gimmick, a trend that has continued through other animated features. (2001)

Sam Rockwell (Lawn Dogs) plays Zaphod Beeblebrox, the biggest narcissist in the universe. (2005)

THE OMEN
Herald rating: * * * *
Classic fright-flick about a child raised by an American diplomat (Gregory Peck), who bears the number of the beast. What's scary about the film is not so much the inventive deaths by decapitation and skewering, but the sense of impending doom that creeps in, enhanced by bleak weather, screeching baboons and wee Damien's squeaky tricycle. (1976)
