The 41-year-old appeared on CNN's Piers Morgan Tonight where was asked by Morgan if he thinks homosexuality is a sin.
'I think that it's unnatural,' Cameron said. 'I think that it's detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilisation.'
Cameron also spoke out against gay marriage adding: 'I believe that marriage was defined by God.
'Marriage is almost as old as dirt, and it was defined in the garden between Adam and Eve.
'One man, one woman for life 'til death do you part. So I would never attempt to try to redefine marriage. And I don't think anyone else should either. So do I support the idea of gay marriage? No, I don't.'
The gay rights group GLAAD immediately released a statement, denouncing the star's comments.
'In this interview, Kirk Cameron sounds even more dated than his 1980s TV character,' said Herndon Graddick, Senior Director of Programs at GLAAD.
The gay rights activist also denounced Cameron's criticism of gay marriage.
'With an increasing number of states recognizing marriage equality, Americans are seeing that marriage is about committed couples who want to make a lifelong promise to take care of and be responsible for each other and that gay and lesbian couples need equal security and legal protections,' Graddick added.
Cameron rose to stardom playing straight laced teenager Mike Seaver on the sitcom Growing Pains from 1985 to 1992.
In July of 1991, he married fellow Growing Pains star Chelsea Noble and they now have six children, four of whom were adopted.
Cameron is known for his conservative views and he even co-founded a ministry called The Way of the Master.
He co-hosts a television show by the same name, which is broadcast on several Christian channels including the Trinity Broadcasting Network and Sky Angel.
In 2008, Kirk starred in the Christian themed feature film Fireproof.
The movie cost just $500,000 to make and earned US$33m at the North American box office.
