KEY POINTS:

Once upon a time Matthew McConaughey starred in relatively entertaining films such as Dazed and Confused, Contact and Edtv. Then he began taking his top off as often as possible, and now it seems his reputation is entirely attached to his impressively tanned and taut six pack. The expectation for him to disrobe in films is now so high that I imagine his failure to do so would have many asking for their money back.
In Fool's Gold he is ready to oblige, and I'm happy to report that this slightly goofy, good-looking romantic comedy veteran is in good shape.
However, even the rippling abs aren't enough to save this adventure-comedy.
McConaughey and his How to Lose A Guy In Ten Days co-star Kate Hudson play divorced treasure hunters Benjamin and Tess Finnegan, who have spent years searching for sunken Spanish treasure known as the Queen's Dowry that was lost at sea off the coast of Florida in 1715.
Benjamin convinces Tess he's discovered the wreck and together they persuade Tess' wealthy boss Nigel (Donald Sutherland) to fund one last voyage.
Throw in a murderous hip-hop star (Kevin Hart), a rival treasure hunter (Ray Winstone), and a dull subplot about Nigel's dysfunctional relationship with his ditsy daughter, and it all sinks down a gap between adventure and romantic comedy.
There are a few unexpected funny moments thanks to Hudson, but mostly the comedic timing is off. The most rewarding gag is when Tess borrows an elderly gent's cane and knocks Benjamin out with it. If only he'd had his top off, it would have been perfect.
