Hot from its screening at the Sundance Film Festival, Foo Fighter Dave Grohl's foray into rockumentary - Sound City about "America's greatest unsung recording studio" is getting a limited one-day release in Auckland.
The San Fernando Valley recording facility was the birthplace of classic albums by Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Metallica and many more, and was one of several iconic studios that closed with the onset of computer programs such as Pro Tools.
Telling the history of the analogue studio was a personal one for first-time director Grohl - it's where he recorded Nirvana's classic album Nevermind. And when it went out of business he bought the studio's vintage Neve mixing console and installed it in his home studio where the Foo Fighters' most recent album was recorded.
The film will be screen at Event Cinemas Queen St next Thursday January 31.
