Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction during a performance with Justin Timberlake at Super Bowl halftime in 2004 will go down in history.
Janet Jackson exposes a breast, Fergie grinds awkwardly and Indiana Jones makes an appearance. Here are the top five most disastrous Super Bowl acts of all time.
In celebration of the NFL's Super Bowl golden anniversary today (NZ time) we look at some of the biggest disasters in halftime history.
This year organisers ensured success by bringing back some of the most popular past acts. Beyoncé and Bruno Mars will join Coldplay at Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, California.
Unfortunately things do go wrong, here are our top picks for the five most unforgettable fails.
It's a family show, so all that bumping and grinding between Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake was questionable to start with. Things deteriorated further when the Rock your Body singer almost made good on his promise to "have you naked by the end of this song," accidentally exposing Jackson's breast in what was later labelled an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction.
2. M.I.A flipping the bird, 2012
Having a guest performer pull the middle finger while mouthing "I don't give a sh**" isn't the proudest moment in Super Bowl halftime history. The rapper was criticised, and NFL forced to apologise after failing to blur the sequence on television. M.I.A's momentary guest appearance on Madonna's song Give Me All Your Luvn', overshadowed the pop queen's entire showcase.
3. When Slash met Fergie, 2011
It was so far so good when Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash rose from the stage surrounded by smoke, playing the familiar tune Sweet Child O' Mine. But when Black Eyed Pea's front woman Fergie began singing the performance fell flat, literally. As she grinds against the middle aged rocker one question comes to mind - who thought up this awkward pairing?
4. Indiana Jones invasion, 1995
Disney's overblown spectacle: Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Forbidden Eye, was less than entertaining. Apparently the purpose was to promote an Indiana Jones themed attraction at Disneyland, California - we're not even sure it did that much. The whole thing seemed strange, uncomfortable and out of place.
Michael Jackson out of sync, 1993
Michael Jackson's early 90s appearance gave birth to the spectacle of today, relegating the marching bands and Rockettes to Super Bowl history. Truth be told, it wasn't one of his finest moments. The dancing was great; the lip-syncing wasn't. He spent nearly two baffling minutes standing immobile, absorbing cheers. The big-stage template has been followed ever since, though.
