West is best: TV3 juggernaut Outrageous Fortune munted the opposition at last night's annual glamfest, the Qantas Television Awards. TV3 also scooped TVNZ in the hotly contested news and current affairs sections.
Outrageous Fortune, which follows a West Auckland family's efforts to turn away from crime, pocketed five out of its eight nominations, including Best Drama, Best Actress (Robyn Malcolm), Best Actor (Antony Starr) and Best Script (James Griffin).
Malcolm was also crowned our favourite homegrown female personality, winning the People's Choice Awards decided by public voting. The actress, elegant in a strapless Liz Mitchell dress, said: "It's one thing to be recognised by your peers, but when the punters turn around and give you the thumbs-up, it's just fantastic."
TV3 won the coveted Best News trophy. Campbell Live, 3 News and 60 Minutes each won their categories, and TV3's Duncan Garner was named TV Journalist of the Year while Melanie Reid's Let Us Spray documentary collected the award for Best TV Investigation.
TVNZ's Mark Sainsbury won the Best Presenter award for fronting Close Up.
